What is SEO?
SEO - Search engine optimisation - is the process of optimising a website for higher search engine rankings. Although all search engines work slightly differently, they all exist for one purpose - to return relevant search results based on the keyword or phrase entered. The more relevant the search engine results they provide to their users:
- the more they will keep their users happy
- the more their users will come back and use them again
- and basically the more they can sell their paid advertising services.
If your website provides the product or service that their users are looking for then they need your site to be listed in their results - so the key is to give them what they want. This is what effective search engine optimisation is all about.
All major search engines have guidelines as to what they consider to be a good site and what they don't like and, perhaps more importantly, what could get your website banned or de-listed from their results. Effective search engine optimisation must stay within these guidelines - getting banned or de-listed from a search engines results will obviously prove disastrous.
What search engines like:
- Well structured and clean website code
- Good, structured content
- Consistent and good navigation
- Text based links
- Alt and Title tags to describe your content
- No error pages
- Inbound links to your website
Although these guidelines are pretty broad, effective search engine optimisation works within these whilst taking it to another level to drive long term quality website traffic to your website on a consistent basis.
